Moni & Mark NelsonHow they Met2

HOW DID THE TWO OF YOU MEET?

We both met in college in a small skiing town in the mountains of Colorado. We both had a local job at the front desk of a local gym and eventually we became friends. We would always see each other snowboarding and try and show off our ‘tricks’ in the snowboard park. Eventually Mark finally got the courage and asked me out and it was unreal. I jumped up and down for like 20 minutes after the phone call. We had a date the next day and have been inseparable ever since!

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER FOR?

We have been together for 14.5 years and married for 10.5… I know right!

WAS IT LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT (OR FIRST SQUAT)?

Moni: It was. You could say ‘love at first snowboard trick’. Or his smile actually, love at first smile for me. I loved him instantly.

Mark: Yeah. I went home after our first date and told my best friend that I wanted to marry her.

WHAT WAS IT THAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO EACH OTHER?

Moni: So much! But without writing a novel, basically his energy and the smile he shares with the world. People love to be around him – I love being one of those people. He is hands down the most enthusiastic person I know which is very important to me. We both have so much in common too, we both love being dorks.

Mark: Her personality. She was just so real and open and fun. Monica is the strongest and most adventurous person I know. She is passionate, loving, talented and she inspires. She was crazy then too – always taking huge falls on her skateboard and snowboard but Never Gave Up!

DO YOU HAVE A COUPLE’S NAME (A LA BRANGELINA)?

We do… it’s M&M.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE WAY TO TRAIN TOGETHER?

We both like intensity, we do a lot of High Intensity Strength Training. We like to put each other through circuits and have been enjoying a weekly Yoga class. We also love the beach, surfing, snowboarding, hiking and biking. We are all about playing in nature so mountains and beach.

HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE VALENTINE’S DAY?

Moni: Since we are both trainers we both usually work and train our amazing clients for most of the day and then have a nice dinner planned. I always whip up some sort of healthier chocolate treat too from my healthy recipe site (monimeals.com) It’s so fun to feed Mark! I love how he loves my cooking so we usually celebrate with food. What I always say and truly believe is that Food is Love! Oh and he better get me a cool gift too… just kidding.

Mark: An awesome night in with an amazing meal. I am hoping Moni wants to cook a yummy dish. Last year she made these amazing pinto bean and kale enchiladas with a homemade sauce… I want that again. I always make Moni a special card too and our tradition is chocolate covered strawberries because we had them at our wedding and enjoy them every anniversary too!

IF YOUR LOVE STORY HAD A NAME WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Moni: “The cutest guy in town just asked ME out… No way!”

Mark: “The Right Time, The Right Place”

WHAT’S YOUR SECRET TO RELATIONSHIP SUCCESS?

Moni: To communicate and stay conscious, focusing on the good qualities and always growing is so important. One thing we do is make sure we put in an effort to make things exciting – for example date night. We take turns in planning one every week. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a killer meal or a walk in the Venice canals works for me. I also think ‘unplugging’ is a huge secret and Mark knows to put his gadgets away when we’re together.

Mark: Celebrate your partner’s individual passions and their own individual personality. We are both very supportive of each other’s passions. You can’t change anyone but it is a mutual respect to treat your partner with love and respect; treat them how you would like your partner to treat you. And have fun, laugh and enjoy each other’s company.
